Thank you for visiting the official website for the Micro/Nano
Fluidics Fundamentals Focus (MF3) Center. Our center is composed of academic, government
and commercial institutions across the country dedicated to the development of the basic
science and technology of micro/nanoscale fluidics and their advancement toward
applications in a number of commercial and military arenas.
Harvard University granted $9M
Congratulations to Dr. George Whitesides! The paper microfluidics work that was initially funded
by MF3 has gathered great interest and follow-on funding. Harvard has received a $9M grant
from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to further develop paper microfluidics as part of a
“Zero-Cost Diagnostics” program. For more information about this technology, please check here:

University of Minnesota funded for TGP work
Congratulations to Dr. Tianhong Cui! Dr. Cui and former MF3 Senior Corporate member, Raytheon,
received funding from DARPA/MTO to develop high performance thermal substrates
under the Thermal Ground Plane (TGP) program. This successful response to DARPA BAA 07-36
was orchestrated by MF3. For more information please check here:

Shawn Hsu & Bill Tang win Best Student Contribution at
ICAST 2008
Congratulations to Shawn and Bill for their work being selected
“Best Student Contribution” at the International Conference for Adaptive
Structures and Technologies (ICAST 2008). This conference was held in Ascona,
Switzerland October 6 – 9, 2008. The title of their paper is “Microfabricated
Piezoelectric Transducer Platform for Mechanical Characterization of Cellular Events.”
This paper is currently available in the MF3 Library.
MF3 in the Media
The MF3 Center has been featured in the UC Irvine Henry Samueli School of
Engineering publication Innovations. The article, entitled "UC Irvine Establishes Center to Study
Small-Scale Fluidic Behavior," gives a nice overview of MF3 and center goals. Please check here:

MF3 has also been featured in a University of California, Irvine press
release. To see the full text of this release check
